Deschooling Ourselves

June 28th, 8pm-9.30pm

With guests: May Ling Thomas & Dan Moeller
Hosted by: Esther Jones and Melissa Crockett-Joyoue

Unschooling naturally requires us to challenge our long-held beliefs about children, learning, parenting and lots more (!). This is incredibly valuable work but it can also be extremely uncomfortable. With our guests, we'll discuss the kinds of things that often come up and some strategies and tools to help you in the process.

In this 90-minute Zoom session, you'll have the chance to engage in personal reflection, interactive discussion, and live Q&A with our experienced guests and hosts.

We'd especially love to see more unschooling dads join us for this session, so if you know one please share this invitation!

We will explore questions such as:

  • Why do we need to deschool
  • How does our deschooling affect our relationship with our children
  • What are the most common challenges
  • What tools and practices can help with the process
  • In what ways can deschooling affect other areas of our lives

GUESTS:

MAY LING THOMAS is a self-directed education facilitator, an unschooling mother of two, an organising member of the Freedom to Learn Network and a transformative coach and healer. Still recovering from internalised neo-liberal capitalism and white supremacy, her latest achievements include Lvl 431 in “Drop the Cat” and a 17 day streak of remembering to put the dishwasher on before bed.

DAN MOELLER is a teacher-turned-unschooling father, parenting coach, and advisor for self-directed education. He advocates consent, youth empowerment, and connection. He has an affinity for children, creativity, and organic play having spent much of his life as a teacher and around families. He partners with his son on their Unschooling With Kai podcast and their hilarious, in-progress book Bunny Stampede. He enjoys writing about all things unschooling, and can often be found reading, watching movies, skateboarding, wall-climbing, finding humor, making friends with local squirrels and crows, and spending time with his family.

HOSTS:

ESTHER JONES is a mindfulness teacher, deschooling coach and mother of three unschooled children. She is the Co-Founder of The Unschooling Summit, author of The Parent's Handbook to Unschooling Yourself and host of The Unschool Space podcast, in which she explores unschooling with other unschooling parents.

MELISSA CROCKETT-JOYOUE is a Māori, AuDHD mama of two unschooled neurodivergent children. She is the Co-Founder of The Unschooling Summit and the Founder of Weave ND, an online membership community supporting neurodivergent unschooling families with a focus on capacity building and connection for the parents.
